Book Blog #4: Next by Michael Crichton

After reading this book I can say that I learned more about how corrupt science has to get for advancement and truly understand the questioning of morals as a scientist. I close the book feeling somewhat disturbed from everything that has happened. There is a farmer at the end of the book that talks to Henry, the scientist of the year, about how he would like to see human chimpanzees working on his farm. This is a very dark and weird way to end a novel, but I liked it.

Compared to the other writers we have read and studied this year Michael Crichton is very unique, but there are some similarities. Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn was set in a realistic location and other than the made up characters, the book seems like it could actually happen. This is very similar to the realistic feeling of Crichton’s fictional writing. Topic wise this book was very similar to H.G Well’s book, The Time Machine. In both books the scientific envelope is being pushed to the edge.

I really enjoyed reading this book on the plan ride to and from Seattle, and would recommend that anyone who likes science fiction, horror books,or even mystery books check out Next by Michael Crichton.
